| An Open Statement From Alicia
During the past 12 years, I am proud of my leadership in party-building in one of our two fastest-growing demographic bases, the Asian American community. I am proud of my leadership in party-building in initiating a "58 county strategy" – being the first Party Officer to visit many of our northern counties. I am proud of my leadership in broadening decision-making and supporting our grassroots activists by working to maintain and support our diverse caucuses. I attend most of the caucuses at every Executive Board meeting to keep in touch with the concerns of our diverse communities and grassroots groups. I am proud of my leadership in helping to bring the California Democratic Party into the 21st Century of technology and communication through my initiation and advocacy of our email list – now considered the best email list of any state party. This is an exciting, exhilarating and inspiring time to be involved in Democratic politics. Like all of you I am profoundly inspired by our new President and his vision for change and civic activism. This is a crucial time for Democrats in California and we must ensure that California remains a blue state for generations to come. I want to emulate President Obama's goals and continue my own efforts in calling for change in our party. We need greater transparency in party operations. It is time for accountability from the party leadership to the grassroots activists that are the heart and soul of our party as well as accountability from our elected Democratic officialsfor implementing the policies and principles of the party platform. We also must have a new broad-based decision making structure in CDP, one that includes real input from all statewide officers and the Executive Board. Finally, I believe the state party needs to provide greater and more balanced support for all counties in our state. We need to Implement a 58 county strategy as part of our party building efforts this year. Building a strong party presence at the grassroots level in every county and A.D. will ensure that our party will elect a governor in 2010, reelect Senator Boxer, as well as gain a sufficient majority in the state legislature to pass a Democratic budget -- one that protects children and seniors, working families like ours, that funds education and healthcare, and ensures that corporations pay their fair share in taxes. T.A.B.S.—transparency, accountability, broader decision making, and support of our grassroots activists—this is what I will be fighting to achieve in the next 4 years, and I hope I can count on your support. I have a lifelong history of political activism and have played a number of pioneering and leadership roles: I was a founding member of the American Federation of Teachers at City College. I have worked on voter registration in the Asian American community for over 25 years, and am a sought after representative for the Democratic party in local, statewide, as well as national ethnic media because of my fluent trilingual skills.
